Asustek to ship i-mode phone to DoCoMo by year-end, sources say

Asustek Computer, which reportedly landed an i-mode handset order from NTT DoCoMo early this year, is expected to begin shipping to the Japanese carrier by the end of the year at the earliest, according to sources.

Asustek declined to comment on the news.

According to sources, the two companies are likely to decide on a prototype, based on Asustek’s existing GPRS handset prototype with added i-mode technology, before the end of this month. The device will be Asustek’s first commercially launched handset.

The Chinese-language Economic Daily News reported in January that the i-mode handset will be based on Asustek’s existing AGP100 prototype, featuring a clamshell and dual-screen design, with the primary screen displaying 65,000 colors.

It is unclear whether the phone will be equipped with a digital still camera (DSC). NTT DoCoMo last month unveiled its 505i line, a series of six camera phones with picture resolution ranging from 310,000 to 1.2 million pixels.
